Clues are a reason to look closer
Hail can damage shingles in ways that are difficult to identify from below. Dented gutters or downspouts, missing shingles and new water stains deserve attention. They do not, by themselves, establish the condition of every part of your roof.
GAF's storm-damage guide explains that some damage requires professional assessment and recommends documenting visible changes after a storm.
Start with a safe record from the ground
- Wait until conditions are safe. Stay clear of downed wires, unstable branches and damaged areas.
- Photograph visible changes from a safe position. Note the storm date and where each photo was taken.
- Record new leaks or stains without entering unsafe spaces. Contact a professional promptly if water is getting inside.
- Leave roof access and close inspection to a qualified roofer.
Ask for findings you can understand
When you contact a roofer, describe what you saw instead of guessing the diagnosis. For example: “We noticed new dents on this downspout after Monday's storm. Can you inspect the roof and explain what you find?”
Keep these questions handy for the conversation:
- Can you show me photographs of the areas you inspected?
- What did you find, and where is it located?
- What work, if any, do you recommend, and why?
- Can you provide the proposed scope and price in writing?
Save the report alongside your photos so you have a record to refer to later. An inspection should help you understand your roof and the proposed next step.
